The History of the Region
The landmass that would eventually become the Midori Region has been around for a long time, wild and untamed for centuries. It wasn't until about a century ago that adventurous explorers discovered it and saw the potential for creating a new region. Over the next 30 years, these adventurers gathered resources and manpower, knowing that this was going to be a huge undertaking. Some of the older members of this team even went into it knowing that they likely wouldn't live to see this new region in its prime.
Nevertheless, they were invested. Once they believed they had everything they needed to at least get started, development of the new region was finally ready to begin. There was just one thing that needed to be done first; due to the massive green jungle lying at the center of the region, the settlers (most of whom originated from Kanto) decided on a name for this new region; Midori. S Thus began a long and ambitious project; one that would be met with some major hardships along the way.
The first order of business was to form teams and do some exploring; get a lay of the land so they could find places to build towns cities without having to disturb the wildlife more than necessary. The biggest obstacle was the jungle. It was massive in size and covered nearly all of the region. At first, they had little trouble clearing it away. The initial goal was to clear away about 30% of the jungle; there'd still be plenty there for the wild Pokemon to live in, and some room to build towns and cities.
If need be, they could clear away more later on, but it was a solid start. Or so they thought. They were close to reaching their initial goal when people started to notice something strange. They were extremely careful about making sure no harm came to the wild Pokemon who lived in the jungle, and thus far hadn't come across any major resistance aside from occasionally stumbling into a the nest of an especially territorial Pokemon; it certainly wasn't anything that they couldn't handle.
But as they went deeper in, they were met with more resistance. Wild Pokemon who were once docile suddenly went berserk and chased everyone off. While most of the Pokemon were fairly weak, they made up for it by swarming the explorers with sheer numbers. It seemed as long as they had no intention of cutting down the jungle any more than they already had, they were allowed to explore to a certain point. But even then, those who strayed too far inside were met with swarms of angry Pokemon
Worse yet, some settlers had managed to set up the foundation for what would be a decent city within the confines of the jungle. It would have been the first city to be completed in the Midori Region. But apparently the jungle didn't like that one bit. Almost as if to mock the settlers, wild Pokemon would wait until the city was nearly completed before attacking in hordes and destroying everything, undoing what felt like a lifetime of progress.
This was when people began to suspect that there was a malevolent entity of some kind at the heart of the jungle; one that was actively going out of its way to block their progress into the jungle. Dejected by this turn of events, many of the settlers debated on abandoning the project; however, there were more who simply refused to give up. Since they wouldn't be able to build anything inside of the jungle, they'd simply build everything around it.
As such, while it ended up taking a different direction than expected, the development of the region resumed. The first city to officially be completed as Kordylia City; from there, the others started to follow. Meanwhile, a Midiorian branch of the Pokemon Rangers was established with the blessing of the branches from the other regions. And soon, after what seemed like an eternity since they began building, and in spite of multiple setbacks, each planned city was completed.
The city that would become the capital of the region, Phlox was given the most modern look, while those surrounding it were less advanced. They still had some modern conveniences; it's not like they were a bunch of middle-of-nowhere backwoods towns. But compared to Phlox, it was easy to forget that. Nevertheless, it wasn't long after that the next step of the region's development was put into motion; the establishment of a Pokemon League.
The locations for each gym had already been determined, so all that was needed was to select the leaders. Then, in the otherwise boring and unassuming Alpina town, a man who would go on to become the Region's first professor made his home there. Now it was simply a matter of getting people to actually move to the region. This is where the Midori Region gained what is still its biggest reputation; it became a place fueled largely by tourism.
The Midori Region Today
While countless thousands of people have since moved to Midori and become permanent residents, the region still, to this day, relies heavily on tourism. It's biggest way of drawing in people is that it advertises itself as a great place for beginning trainers to start their journeys. Whether they want to take on the league or wow an audience in a contest, there's plenty here for everyone. The Midori League goes above and beyond to make life as a trainer as convenient as possible.
Even traveling from one city to another is a breeze for both trainers and citizens alike; each city has a "taxi service" where, for virtually no cost at all, they can ride a Pokemon to another city in a fraction of the time it would take to reach it by foot. Once could fly high it the skies on the back of a Charizard or a Skarmory, or they can take a scenic ride on the back of a Rapidash or a Tauros. These Pokemon are specially trained to avoid wild Pokemon, so people can just relax and enjoy the ride.
Very recently, a group of scientists lead by the daughter of the Region's first professor, Adriel Yucca, made a breakthrough. Each of the other regions had at least one Professor who had developed an advanced index of Pokemon called a PokeDex; they allowed trainers to scan a Pokemon after catching them to receive all sorts of detailed information about the Pokemon; where they can be found in the wild, detailed information about their behavior and such.
While some of the information given could be...questionable at best, there was still no doubt that they were a technical marvel. The only problem was that they were so highly advanced that they were extremely difficult to mass-produce thus only a select few trainers were ever able to receive one. While she could understand this, Adriel didn't like this one bit. So she started work on a simpler version of the PokeDex; eventually, after years of research and development, she succeeded in creating the PokeDex Lite.
This model was far less advanced than the PokeDexes they were based on. However, rather than collecting data on a Pokemon as they were being caught, one could simply can a Pokemon, wild or otherwise, to gain some basic data on them, such as the name of their species and their Type; for Pokemon owned by a trainer, one could also see what Ability they had without needing to access the PC, as well as the moves they currently know and, if applicable, how close they are to evolving.
Best of all, because of how much simple it was, they were able to release it commercially, and for surprisingly cheap as well. Not that Adriel was concerned with making a profit anyway. Nevertheless, it was a great day for Midori as a whole.
Even today, the Midori Region is still thriving, with new trainers coming every day to see what the region has in store for them. To this day, however, the mystery surrounding the Jungle and the apparent malevolent force held within. Many questions remain unanswered, and most have given up on finding them. Others are still trying to learn the truth behind it, albeit with very little, if any, success. With no way of going deeper into the jungle, there's seemingly nothing anyone can do.
What is the deal with the jungle? What is the mysterious entity inside of it and why is it so intent on keeping people out of the jungle? We may never know the answer. Only one thing is certain; a good mystery is great for attracting tourism.
(some quick OOC notes; no, your character does not actually have to pay for the "taxi service" or the PokeDex Lite; or, more specifically, you don't actually have to buy them with the money you make on here. It can just be assumed that they paid for 'em and that they've already picked up the Pokedex)
